If you are researching care homes for yourself or someone you love, there’s a lot of information to take in. Aside from a solid reputation, caring staff and appropriate facilities, you also want to get a feel for what everyday life is actually like there.
What are mealtimes like? Will I have control over my day? When can family visit? Is there a sociable atmosphere? What if I need quiet time on my own?
These are questions that brochures and websites can’t always answer. That’s why, at Beneva Care homes, we encourage potential residents and their families to visit, take in the atmosphere and ask as many questions as they like.
Daily life in our four nursing and residential homes is centred around comfort, dignity and belonging, with support when it is needed. There are plenty of opportunities for individual choice, family time, as well as socialising and enjoying activities.
We’ve put together this brief article to help bring it to life.
Come and see life at Beneva Care for yourself by arranging a visit
What does a typical day in a care home look like?
Most care homes balance practical support with meals, social time, activities and opportunities to relax.
At Beneva Care homes, these things bring structure to the day, but our residents still have plenty of choice over how they spend their time. That might mean joining an activity, seeing family, chatting with fellow residents, enjoying the garden or simply having some quiet time in their own room.
So while there is no single version of what care home life is like, here’s an idea of what a day looks like.
What is life in a care home like in the morning?
Everyone has their own morning routines, and we’re pleased to accommodate them. Some residents appreciate help with washing and dressing, which is always handled with care and dignity.
Breakfast is available throughout the morning to cater for early birds and those who prefer a later start. All of our meals are prepared on site and cater to different tastes and dietary needs. The menu includes cereals, porridge, fruit, and cooked breakfasts.
What happens during the day?
Each day features organised activities based on our residents’ interests and feedback. These shared experiences help residents stay active, keep their minds engaged, and simply have fun. The aim is not to keep every minute busy, but to offer variety, choice and interest.
Activities include crafts, music, games, movies and gentle exercise classes. We often welcome guest entertainers such as singers, musicians, and local theatre groups.
Our residents enjoy regular social occasions, such as barbecues and afternoon tea, which family and friends are invited to join. We also organise occasional day trips to places like local parks and theatres.
Visit our blog and read our monthly highlights to see what we’ve been up to recently.
Are daily activities compulsory?
Residents are gently encouraged to join in, but it’s entirely their choice. If someone prefers quiet time alone, there are plenty of cosy spaces both indoors and outdoors to read, relax and enjoy individual hobbies. Everyone has their own private room to retreat to, which they are free to personalise as they wish.
Lunch and dinner
At Beneva Care homes, residents are not restricted to set meal times. Food, snacks and refreshments are available 24 hours a day, and residents can request something to eat outside the normal breakfast, lunch and evening meal service.
Our menus are designed to offer variety, familiar favourites and choice. We can cater to a wide range of individual dietary needs, preferences, allergies and cultural requirements.
Residents have the choice of eating in the dining room, with friends, in the lounge or in their own room. Our dining areas are arranged to encourage a sociable dining experience,
Staff can provide support with eating and drinking if needed, to help all residents enjoy mealtimes with comfort and dignity.
What happens during the evening?
After dinner, evenings are intentionally quieter, with time to wind down. There is certainly no set bedtime, so residents can enjoy their own routine. Some guests prefer to head back to their room and watch television. Others like to sit in the lounge to chat, read, enjoy a film or play a game.
Staff are available to help with personal care, medication and getting ready for bed. When the lights go out, residents can be confident of help whenever they need it. There is 24h support in all of our homes, including qualified nurses at Solent Cliffs Nursing Home and Beechwood House.
Visitors are welcome in the evenings, and there are no restricted visiting hours.
“The care of the staff and the activities arranged cannot be faulted. We were always welcomed and always met with a very ‘homely’ attitude and nothing was ever too much trouble. It is such a relief knowing mum is in a safe place and very well cared for – thank you!!”
Paul B, Son of Resident
How care plans shape life for residents
In order to ensure every new resident feels at home, we carry out an assessment before they move in. We get to know them as people, along with their preferences, routines, and personal and health needs.
Then we create a Personal Care Plan to guide daily care, including physical assistance, dietary needs, medication, mobility, nursing care, and emotional support. Plans are accessible via an app, and families are encouraged to review and contribute to them. They are reviewed regularly to ensure plans remain suitable as needs change.
Why encouraging independence is so important
Many people envisage care home life as dependence on others and a loss of privacy and control. At Beneva, we realise the importance of independence and choice. Every day, we see the difference it makes to people’s confidence and wellbeing: it helps them retain a sense of self, not defined by their age, diagnosis or physical needs.
Residents are free to shape their own routines with help only where they need and ask for it. For our dedicated staff, the watchwords are ‘dignity’, ‘choice’, ’empathy’ and ‘gentle encouragement’.
How often can friends and family visit?
Moving into a care home doesn’t mean being cut off from friends and family. At Beneva Care homes, we have an open door policy, and visitors are always welcome. We are also happy to invite family dogs in all of our homes.
Whether it’s a quiet chat in a private room, a shared activity, a local walk, or enjoying a special event together, we encourage these moments of togetherness. Regular phone and video calls also help residents stay connected.
Getting to know the care staff at our Beneva Care homes
Beneva Care is a family-run business, so creating a family atmosphere is important to us. Many of our team members have been with us for years, and we support them with ongoing training, NVQ progression and opportunities to move into more senior roles as their experience grows.
Our teams include qualified carers, nurses (at Solent Cliffs and Beechwood House), management, office staff, catering crew, activity coordinators, cleaning and laundry teams, and maintenance staff. Together, they create a welcoming, calm and friendly atmosphere for our residents and their visitors.
Each home is led by an experienced manager, who is available to answer your questions:
Hayley McGuinness at Beechwood House
Victoria Dunn at Woodlands Care Home
Hayley Kramm at Solent Cliffs Nursing Home
“I was told by a friend, when looking for a care home, not to look at the flash surroundings, or facilities, but to look to see if the staff are happy at work. And I would recommend this to anyone now. The staff at my Dads’ nursing home are amazing, they go beyond what is expected of them to look after the residents. They truly do care. They know all the residents individually, knowing their likes and dislikes and notice if they are slightly off colour. They are also wonderfully friendly to their visiting relatives and friends.”

FAQs about daily life in a care home
Do care home residents have to follow a strict daily routine?
No. Meals, medication and care needs provide some structure, but personal routines and preferences still shape the day. Residents can choose whether to socialise, join group activities, enjoy a hobby, spend time outside or relax in their own room.
Can residents bring their own belongings into a care home?
Absolutely. Residents are welcome to bring belongings like photographs, books, keepsakes and furniture to help make their new room feel familiar and personal.
